I love this little quilt,  only 20" x  19¼”, probably because I love working with neutrals. 

Birches

Birches was inspired by the many clumps of birches local to our area.

A piece of my own hand dyed suggested trees in the background. I added a few bits of fabric and stitching to complete the background. The foreground was covered with snippets (small pieces of several fused fabrics) and stitched down.

The tree trunks were made individually using a “crackled” fabric fused to a stiff interfacing to which I added the marks on the trunks. These were than arranged and stitched on to the background and I used Shiva oil paint sticks to create the shadowing and darkened areas on the trunks.

A skinny little border framed the piece and once the quilting was completed, the wider border was turned to the back as a binding.
