Blue on Blue

I made this very first sampler quilt as a class sample and used as many techniques as I could find at the time. This was made in the early nineties, I was mostly self-taught and had been quilting for approximately 5 years.

There is a mixture of hand and machine work in this quilt.

Grandmother's Flower Garden - english piecing

This was a quilt-as-you-go quilt, and I did make one more quilt using this method but found I did not enjoy the assembling although the quilting part was certainly easier.

Attic Windows - Y-seam piecing

I have since made several samplers and have had most of them quilted by a long arm quilter.

Schoolhouse - paper-pieced roof & diagram piecing

Although samplers aren't everyone's cup of tea, I find it an excellent means of teaching different techniques in a small format. One block – one technique.

Choosing fabric, colours and values carefully can make all the difference in uniting the blocks.

Blue on Blue is monochromatic, made up of 7 fabrics – 2 light values, 3 medium and 2 darks.
